There’s a scratch in your epoxy floor. Maybe the workshop got a little rough, maybe someone dragged a toolbox across the surface, or maybe you moved a heavy appliance and left a trail. Before you panic and call for a full recoat, it’s worth knowing this: most scratches in epoxy are purely cosmetic and fixable for less than $50.

Here’s how to assess what you’re dealing with and what the repair actually involves.

Fine Scratches vs Deep Scratches: Why It Matters

Epoxy floor systems typically consist of multiple layers — a primer or base coat, sometimes a decorative broadcast layer, and a clear topcoat. The severity of a scratch determines whether you’re dealing with a surface-only issue or a problem that exposes lower layers or bare concrete.

Fine scratches (also called swirl marks or micro-scratches) sit in the clear topcoat only. They catch light and look worse than they are. The underlying color layer, broadcast chips, and concrete are all fully protected. These are polishing problems, not coating problems.

Deep scratches penetrate through the topcoat and into the color base or broadcast layer. They may look cloudy or show the aggregate beneath. If the scratch reaches bare concrete, you have a gap in the protective coating that can allow moisture in over time.

Gouges — where material has been physically removed and the floor surface is uneven — require filling before any topcoat repair.

The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America notes that most homeowner floor scratches are in the topcoat layer only, largely because quality polyaspartic and polyurethane topcoats have Taber abrasion resistance ratings of 50–100 mg/1,000 cycles — meaning they resist surface cutting very effectively.

Diagnosing Your Scratch

Run your fingernail across the scratch at a 90-degree angle. If your nail glides over it without catching, it’s a surface scratch — the epoxy surface is still intact and smooth, just optically marked. If your nail drops into the scratch, material has been removed and you need more than polishing.

Under bright light (or a flashlight held at a low angle), surface scratches look bright and reflective. Deep scratches look matte or cloudy, and gouges have visible shadow depth.

Fixing Fine Scratches: The Polishing Approach

For surface-only scratches, a polishing compound is all you need. The same automotive polishing products used on clear coat scratches on cars work on epoxy floors.

What you’ll need:

  • Automotive polishing compound (3M Finesse-It, Meguiar’s M105, or similar)
  • Soft cloth or low-speed polisher with foam pad
  • Clean water and microfiber for wipe-down

Process:

  1. Clean the area thoroughly — any grit will make scratches worse
  2. Apply a small amount of polishing compound to a damp cloth
  3. Work in circular motions over the scratched area
  4. Wipe clean and inspect under a light
  5. Repeat with a finer finishing compound if needed

For a small area, this is a 20-minute job. A bottle of automotive compound costs $15–$25. If the scratch is in a high-gloss floor and the polishing creates a duller spot, a light application of a compatible clear wax restores the uniform sheen.

Important: This only works if the scratch hasn’t penetrated through the topcoat layer. If the polishing reveals darker or lighter material underneath, you’ve gone through the topcoat and need a different approach.

Fixing Deep Scratches: Spot Recoating

Deep scratches that penetrate the topcoat need to be filled and recoated. This is a multi-step repair but still manageable as a DIY project on small areas.

DIY repair kit approach ($40–$90): Several manufacturers sell epoxy touch-up kits specifically for spot repairs. They typically include a small amount of two-part clear epoxy, sandpaper, and instructions. The process:

  1. Clean and degrease the damaged area
  2. Lightly sand the scratch edges with 120-grit to help the new material bond
  3. Mix the two-part epoxy per instructions
  4. Apply to fill the scratch level with the surrounding floor
  5. Allow full cure (24 hrs minimum)
  6. Sand smooth with 220-grit, then 400-grit
  7. Buff with polishing compound to match surrounding sheen

The results are good for individual scratches. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

Professional spot recoat ($150–$400 for small areas): A contractor can feather in new material more seamlessly than a DIY kit. For scratches in a high-visibility area, this is often worth the cost.

When to Consider a Full Recoat

Some scratch situations make a full recoat the better financial decision:

  • Multiple deep scratches across a large area (repairing individually costs more than recoating)
  • Color layer damage where color matching is impossible
  • Existing floor is already yellowed, and spot repairs will be obvious
  • Floor has other issues (peeling edges, adhesion concerns) that are worth addressing at the same time
